This is Mito Komon, played in Kabuki in the early Meiji era.
This Mito Komon was played by the ninth-generation Ichikawa Danjuro, who was said to be the "drama sacred" and made major contribution to the kabuki world.
Ninth-generation Ichikawa Danjuro played kabuki in front of the Emperor Meiji for the first time, and raised kabuki, which used to be a townman's culture, to become one of Japan's leading traditional performing arts. Mito Komon was the second lord of the Mito Domain, Mitsukuni Tokugawa.
Mito Komon himself did not visit other countries, as was the case with TV dramas.
In fact, he simply dispatched staff nationwide to compile national history.
Mitsukuni had strong will and was a reputed lord who abandoned the customs of lord’s subordinates dying when the lord died, rejected the overrunning policy of Tsunayoshi Tokugawa the 5th Shogun, and made many improvements.
This painting is about to defeat Mondayu in Edo-Yashiki, who intended rebellion, by Mito Komon.
It is a powerful Mito Komon that is different from the image of the old man in the drama.
