In the mythological period, Susano no Mikoto was the god of the sea. He was a bit rough, so his elder sister, Amaterasu Omikami, was alert and hid in Amano Iwato. One day, when Susano passed through Izumo, an elderly couple was crying. A terrible dragon with eight heads, Yamatano Orochi, ate the seven daughters, and tonight, the eighth daughter, Princess Kushinada, will also be eaten, they said. Susano prepared sake in eight bottles and waited until night. Then, with a loud voice, a terrible monster, 8 heads dragon, Yamatano Orochi, came out from the sea. However, Yamatano Orochi loved alcohol, so he drunk eight bottles of alcohol and slowed down. Susano did not miss the chance, cut off the eight heads of the Orochi, and exterminated. It is said that Kusanagi sword came out from the Yamatano Orochi dragon. Susano married Princess Kushinada, and would take care of his family. Susano no Mikoto is also the god of marriage, house security and avoidance of evil.
