You can see how women in the early Meiji era practiced various arts.
Beautiful women are depicted playing koto, go, and tea ceremony.
It is said that the koto was introduced to Japan from the Tang dynasty in China during the Nara period, and it seems that it was widely played as court music during the Nara and Heian periods.
In the Edo period, koto performances were sometimes limited to the visually impaired.
However, after the Meiji era, it was released to the general public and seems to have become one of the cultural events of women.
Go also seems to have been introduced from China to Japan during the Nara period.
It was an aristocratic game during the Heian period, but since the Muromachi period it has spread from samurai to civilians.
The golden period was reached in the Edo period, but it fell into a crisis due to the westernization of the Meiji Restoration.
However, after that, it was revived by the efforts of the people involved in Go.
The Meiji era was a time when Japan was full of energy and various cultures flourished.
Ukiyoe conveys that breath.
