This is the Ukiyoe Art depicting the first fighting of Yoritomo Minamoto who opened the Kamakura Shogunate.
When Yoritomo was 13 years old, he followed his father Yoshitomo in the battle against Kiyomori Taira, as his first fighting.
Yoritomo wore the traditional Genji armor, which has been handed down since Yoshiie Minamoto days’s named “Genta ga ware", and brought his first sword, "Higekiri", the great sword inherited from generation to generation in Genji.
Yoritomo was the third son, but he was expected to be the successor because his mother was the first wife of Yoshitomo.
Yoritomo fought hard, but in this battle Genji was defeated, Yoshitomo and Yoritomo’s elder brothers were killed.
Yoritomo was captured by Kiyomori and supposed to be slashed.
However, Kiyomori's stepmother, Ikenozenni pityed on Yoritomo, who had a beautiful appearance and a solid answer, and Yoritomo was sent to Izu to be monitored.
After that, Yoritomo intended to end his life as it was, but in response to the imperial court's call to "defeat the Heike," he raised the flag.
And he defeated the Heike with his younger brothers Noriyori and Yoshitsune.
Yoritomo, who had excellent political ability, made the Imperial Court recognize the sovereignty of the whole country by Yoritomo and opened the Kamakura Shogunate, the first samurai government in Japanese history.
