The Asatsuma ship is a ferry between Asazuma, Shiga prefecture and Otsu. When Kyoto was once the capital city, the wife of samurai and aristocrat who escaped from Kyoto, turned into a Sirabyoshi dancer or a prostitute, and fled by boat. Pictured here is Tsunayoshi Tokugawa, the fifth shogun of the Edo Shogunate. It is said that Tsunayoshi cherished dogs more than people in the "Order of Compassion for Living Beings," but originally it was said that he was doing a good administration. Keishoin, Tsunayoshi's mother, was concerned that Tsunayoshi would not have a boy. Then, she consulted with Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa and brought Yoshiyasu’s wife, Osame, closer to Tsunayoshi as a prostitute. It was said that Tsunayoshi liked Osame and put her on his side. Although this painting is like an Asatsuma ship, it depicts the appearance of Tsunayoshi and Osame dressed in Shirabyoshi dancer. It is a very beautiful picture drawn by Chikanobu Yoshu.
