This is an exciting Ukiyoe by Kuniyoshi Utagawa. Mongaku Shonin, the Buddhist priest of the Heian period was originally a samurai who served the Imperial court, named Morito Endo.
Morito fell in love with a beautiful woman called Kesa Gozen, who had a husband.
Morito, who cannot give up, accidentally killed her in an attempt to kill her husband.
Morito deeply regretted and entered the Buddhist gate to identify himself as a Buddhist superior and worked hard.
One winter day, Mongaku Shonin was practicing at the waterfall at Nachi Falls.
Many times he was faint in the cold, but Mongaku continued his training.
The training lasted 3 days. Mongaku began to see the hallucinations of demons and gods, fainted, stopped his heart, and was washed away by the river.
However, in the middle of the river, a doji pulled the hand of Mongaku and pulled it up to the shore.
The doji was an incarnation of Fudo Myooh God. Mongaku revived and ordered himself to live the way for others.
It is said that he then went to Izu and recommended the raising flag for Yoritomo Minamoto.
