This is the masterpiece of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, which depicts the legend of Demon princess, Momiji, a legend from Togakushi, Nagano Prefecture.
In the middle of the Heian period, a couple in Aizu, who had little children, prayed to the 6th Demon King.
Then, they received a very beautiful Princess Momiji.
Momiji has grown beautifully and went to Kyoto.
Princess Momiji, who was also a master of the koto, was admitted to Tsunemoto Minamoto, became a concubine, and got Tsunemoto’s baby.
Momiji prayed to the Sixth Demon King for the death of Tsunemoto’s the first wife.
However, the high priest saw through Momiji’s scheme and she was exiled to Togakushi.
Momiji was esteemed and used to cure the diseases of the people in Togakushi.
However, Kyoto was not forgotten, and she gathered her subordinates, then become a demon and devastated nearby towns.
Emperor Reizei dispatched Koremochi Taira to subdue the devil demon, Momiji.
The devil demon Momiji, used witchcraft to cause a rain of fire and a heavy flood, which plagued the Koremochi’s Army.
Koremochi struggled hard, and he finally defeated the demon Momiji with the anti devil's sword given by Kannon god.
This picture is one of the representative art works of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka.
