This is the Ukiyoe of the extermination for Nue by Yorimasa Minamoto.
Painted by Toyokuni Utagawa the 3rd. as the master of Ukiyoe in late Edo period.
At the end of the Heian period, the Emperor Nijo's time, people were troubled by the nightly monster calls.
An eerie voice sounded with black smoke around Seiryo-den.
The true character of the cry was “Nue”, with monkey’s face, raccoon dog’s torso, tiger’s limbs and snake’s tail.
Emperor Nijo ordered it’s eradication to Yorimasa Minamoto, who was a descendant of Yorimitsu Minamoto, as the master of the bow.
Yorimasa, together with the subordinate Hayata Ino, fought hard against Nue and finally struck down.
The carcass of Nue was carefully buried.
Yorimasa accepted the famous sword, “Shishioh” (Lion King) as a reward.
During the Heian period, youkai often bothered people.
