It is a painting by Kyosai Kawanabe, who is said to be the picture demon and that there is nothing for him that cannot be drawn.
Kyosai became a disciple of Kuniyoshi Utagawa when he was a child.
When Kyosai was about 12 years old, Kuniyoshi told him to draw something vibrant, so there is an episode in which he picked up dead head in the river and sketched it.
After that, Kyosai was recommended by his father who was worried about Kuniyoshi's rough behavior, and he moved from Kuniyoshi to the Kano school and studied painting.
This painting is a satire of the rapidly Westernized Japan in the early Meiji period.
A mirror made by a master craftsman reflects the youkai wearing western clothes.
The mirrors created by swordsmiths such as Heijuro Honami and Nobuhide Kurihara, see the true identity of Westernized people.
There are also ancient Japanese Youkais, Tamamo Mae and Hyakki Yako.
This is so powerful Ukiyoe Art by full of Kyosai's ideas.
