This is Matsuko Kido, the wife of Takayoshi Kido (Kogoro Katsuta), the representative of Choshu group at the end of Edo period.
Matsuko was originally Geisha in Kyoto and said Ikumatsu.
She was very beautiful and intelligent, so popular.
Takayoshi Kido wanted her to be free by paying money to the Geisha house, but the rival Yamashina merchant was rich.
It was said that Hirofumi Ito, a junior of Choshu group, threatened the merchant with sword, then he gave up Ikumatsu.
At the end of the Edo period, Takayoshi Kido was always aimed at his life by the Shogunate side, including Shinsengumi. Ikumatsu has devotedly helped Takayoshi who hides while disguised as various people.
Ikumatsu herself was also targeted by Shinsengumi and Aizu.
In the first year of the Meiji Era, the two married and Ikumatsu became Matsuko Kido and lived in Tokyo. Takayoshi Kido had been active as the central person of Meiji Government.
However, in the Meiji 10th, Takayoshi fell ill during a business trip to Kyoto and died, in spite Matsuko's devoted nursing.
Matsuko entered the Buddhist gate, changed the name to Suikouin, and lived in Kyoto, protecting the grave of Takayoshi.
