Gekkou Ogata

Ansei 6th (1859) born, Taisho 9th (1920) died
Gekko Ogata started painting with father 's recommendation since childhood and went to Ukiyoe publishers, the asked them to let him draw Nishikie. He studied the style of Yosai Kikuch’s in Kano family by himself, that was active in the early Meiji period from the end of the Tokugawa shogunate.

Around Taisho 14th, he inherited the family name of Koya Ogata of Rimpa family and begin to name Gekko Ogata.
He draw illustrations of newspapers and magazines, including "Chono newspaper with pictures", and getting popular.

In the Meiji 20's, along with the Toshikata Mizuno, Gekko gained enormous popularity as twin top of newspaper illustrates.
In Ukiyoe prints, he produced beautiful woman paintings with pale coloring like Japanese paintings, series “Gekkou’s essay”, and "Gekkou’s Manga" like Hokusai.
As a Japanese art painter, he participated in the Japanese Art Institute established in 1831, meaning he transformed from a town painter to a Japanese artist painter
